She has the sweetest smile, joyous cobalt eyes, and hair like freshly fallen snow, in contrast to her caramel sunkissed flesh. Frostbite and battle scars litter almost every square inch of her body, including three long rakes down the left side of her face, which somehow only caused superficial damage to her eye. She gives off an aura that screams of a warrior that has fought for so long in a short amount of time, and at the same time feels naive to a fault. Stare too long into her eyes, and you will see both her innocence, and the horrors of a war that will never be spoken of by anyone, but her. There is darkness here, you have been warned.Song Within Temptation - Forsaken❃ This story is missing some key parts, and some major context for a few of her quirks you might see in the game if you roleplay with her. It was a story told over the course of six very real-life months. I abridged much of it to just have the story written down.

Upbringing

Leveret’s earliest memories were that of being raised in a war orphanage on the outskirts of Ishgard, overseen by an Elezen commander, Sauveur Appoline. Either as a blessing or a curse, she could not remember her parents, so being raised by strangers did not impact her in the slightest. She was named by the commander, as she herself did not even know her name at the time, and has answered to it ever since. Her training began long before she could hold a sword. Appoline’s training was hard and cruel. The children who couldn’t obey were punished severely, either with a heavy thrashing, or food and warm clothes taken from them. Those caught trying to help the one who disobeyed were punished worse. Wasting food was also punished, no matter how horrible or spoiled the food was, they were to eat it, and like it.Both she and her fellow orphans were raised learning military tactics and how to fight with a weapon most suited to them, reading, writing, or even proper speech was considered unimportant, while reading a map, learning construction, and following orders, no matter what those orders might be, became paramount. This included fighting each other if ordered to. Leveret was stronger than most her age and would continue to be stronger than those around her for most of her carrier. At age ten, every child was given a piglet to take care of. They were told to make sure to clean up after their pig, and if it meant starving they were to feed their pig. This was on top of their soldiering training, and everyday drills. Failure to look after your pet wasn’t just punished, the orphan who failed was made an example of with twenty lashes on a post. After the second child failed in this, everyone knew they had to make sure none of them failed again. Then came the end of five years of taking care of their pet pig, and they were told to kill it and butcher it for food. When one child disobeyed, and the brutal beating they were given was dispensed, by having every other child use a whip on him three times, the dead body of their comrade was enough to make them fall in line. That night, all of them ate a meal of their former pet. When asked how the meal was they responded with tears in their eyes that it was the best meal they had ever had.A year later the soldiers were ready for their first missions. They were a battalion made up of six companies, called the “Compagnie Indésirable.” Leveret was assigned to the fourth company and they were to serve as a vanguard assault group. As they were marching out for the first time, they noticed that there was a new generation being given pigs for the first time. They marched outwards without a word for the new poor souls that would suffer as they had.

Dragonsong War

The Compagnie Indésirable did not want for combat. Combat found them almost at every turn in the wilderness. They did not know the name of many of these wild creatures, but they didn’t care. They had orders to kill or be killed. However, for every soldier lost, the company they were part of would be punished, too many losses punished everyone in the battalion. Rations were reduced, cold weather equipment was taken away, and even medical supplies were withdrawn, depending on the performances in the field. Some of the companies started looking to their fallen foes as sources of food, and supplies. Strangely these actions were not punished by compander Appoline. So the companies agreed to turn the fourth company into a raiding company of their more humanoid foes, to rob them of their supplies and food. While the companies waged battle against the local wildlife they were also put in charge of rebuilding lost forts when not actively engaged with a foe. Appoline however often did find foes for them to fight, or drive off. Between battles, a practice that many started to follow at this time was to hug a fellow company member when coming out of a warm building to trade some of that warmth over to the other. This deepened the bond with those in the same company, and soon it was too widespread to stop when the commander found out about it.After three years of refortifying the lands around Camp Dragonhead, the Dragonsong War started back up in earnest once more. Hardened from fighting against the various species of the wilderness, and the occasional drake incursions, the Compagnie Indésirable went into the war with the same passion they went into every conflict. Only now they had another four companies coming in as well to back them up from the generation they witnessed on their way out. Only, they were much younger, not fed well, and wearing worse equipment. In the opening rush of Nidhogg’s draconic hordes, the original companies watched on dispassionately as the younger members of the new legions were cut down. Some tried to help the new companies, but this always resulted in valuable veterans losing their lives for little gain.During the opening sortie, Leveret’s brute strength caught more than one dragon off guard, but a dragon is a dragon, and she was just a mortal. The fact she was able to slay more than a handful was a rallying cry for her company, and the others rallied with them. After two days of fierce battle and the dragons backed off for some unknown reason. When the companies were called back most of them had suffered terrible losses, so much that there were barely enough soldiers to make up three companies, a scant seven hundred had survived.Commander Appoline’s ire was about to fall upon the remaining soldiers when Aymeric himself showed up to congratulate the battle-weary soldiers. He came to bestow them accolades for their accomplishments, but he was met with cold-faced, and silent soldiers, who only looked to their commander, Appoline. And, so Appoline was rewarded for the service his soldiers performed for Ishgard, and so Leveret was spared the wrath of the commander, temporarily.Aymeric’s visit lasted a few days. Multiple times he tried to speak to the soldiers of the Compagnie Indésirable, but they were ever tight-lipped when he was around. In the end he was unable to speak to any of them, but still, he tried to win their favor with new equipment, and he stayed long enough to see that they equip and use it. Despite Appoline protesting that such things were not needed by his soldiers, he rewarded Leveret and several members of the surviving fourth company heavy greatswords. Leveret herself in fact was given one so massive that two Elezen knights had to bring it to her. There wasn’t a single person who wasn’t startled when she lifted it with one hand and began to swing it around like a child would a stick. The shocked knights left with Aymeric shortly after. This would be their last reprieve before the surviving companies were reorganized into three, and Leveret was put into a platoon within the first company called “chosen of the fourth.” Rations were almost cut off from the companies for the losses in the previous battle, and so the three companies once more set out as they had before, raiding and pillaging the denizens of the Coerthas Central Highlands. The companies would be sent on what most considered suicide missions, without supplies, and go deep into enemy territories to sow death to the foes of Ishgard. For ten long years, they campaigned on and off, fighting monsters, demihuman, and beasts of the land, bringing back spoils, but most of all they fought in the final moments of the Dragonsong War. Leveret was seen as a monster for being as strong as she was, but the day she met the warrior of light, she was left in the shadow of that valiant figure. The strength they displayed outmatched hers, and in the end, even defeated Nidhogg, and brought a kind of peace to Ishgard. For a second time, Aymeric came to the commander and told Appoline that his soldiers had fought for so long and hard for Ishguard that they would be given special leave to go to any of the cities the War of Light went to visit. Appoline could not argue this, without insulting the heroic Aymeric, and so the soldiers of the Compagnie Indésirable were given a handful of coins and sent out to relax for the first time since they could remember in their entire lives.Song Sabaton - Resist and Bite

Life After

The Dragonsong War was over, and Leveret with a few of her fellow soldiers found themselves in Ul’dah. The instant they landed from their airship they were shown to their separate rooms. They had been told that they were paid in full by the commander of Ishgard. Many of the soldiers were uncomfortable with being separated in any way, and they quickly abandoned rooms to stay together. The heat however was unbearable for them, as they had lived their entire lives in the freezing cold of Coerthas.Being the uncultured, uneducated and nearly penniless soldiers that they were many of them went nearly naked into the streets of Ul’dah to beat the oppressive heat. Leveret was no exception. While basking in a cooler breeze she met a small Miqo’te that confronted her on her near nudity. Though Leveret did not understand many of the larger words, she thought the small woman adorable and gave her one of her best hugs. The Miqo’te was not impressed, and when she was finally released from the crushing hug Leveret provided, the smaller woman lectured Leveret on the importance of covering her skin, even in the desert. To which Leveret could not find any fault in, and even received a few articles of clothing handmade by the Miqo’te. Leveret had never experienced such a soft material or that kind of kindness.Leveret would go on to meet a few other associates of the Miqo’te, one being a Roegadyn woman in full armor, to whom the Miqo’te quickly diverted all future hugs. Some were alarmed that Leveret could pick her up to hug her with ease, despite being smaller than the towering woman. A simple friendship was formed, and often the Roe would give Leveret small treats, like apple cider, and even a lemon cake. The only time that Leveret had a lemon she hated it, the betrayer, however, the lemon cake was in fact delicious to her.All good things come to an end, after a few weeks, she and her fellow soldiers left Ul’dah and returned back to Coerthas. No sooner had all the soldiers returned, was it that Appoline tore into them. If they brought back anything other than the approved items he would allow them, which was not much, he field stripped them from the soldiers, a pile was created and his loyal guards created a pyre to destroy those said items, drinks, and food. They were things that would make them weak, and weakness would be punished. Leveret watched the clothes that were made by her new friends turn into ash. For the first time in years, she felt the tears in her eyes freezing in the cold of the highlands. The indiscretion of his soldiers were many, and the commander set upon their punishments. They would be set back out into the wilderness, with no cold weather equipment, no rations, and no medical equipment. They could bring their armor and weapons, but they would have to provide anything they were lacking out in the field. They would either die because they were weak, or they would live because they were strong.Once more the Compagnie Indésirable did what it did best, and they survived for two bitter weeks without their entire kit. Frostbitten, half-starved, and dulled to emotional pain they were allowed back into their barracks. They had only lost four soldiers to the cruel elements and raids for supplies from the hostile creatures of Coerthas. Some of them had lost half of their body weight, as they made sure everyone ate and rationed the food they captured, or caught. The memories of Ul’dah were just a fever dream. A dream she could not forget, and would not forget.Song Eva Under Fire - Until Forever

Months In Shame

For three months the Compagnie Indésirable were kept moving on harsh patrols. Even the most hardened soldier could not keep up with the pace they were forced to march, but they were punished for every loss of their lives, and each sloppy mistake while marching. Those who were in command of Leveret’s company either failed to live up to their role of leadership died from exposure or died in combat. Leveret was given a new rank to fill the void, Storm Captain. A heavy responsibility fell upon her, and she would prove that she was worthy of the name. She was placed in charge of the other companies from her rank alone, and almost overnight they changed. She refused to lose anyone else, often going hungry if it meant one of the other soldiers, who they would lose otherwise die from lack of food. Her raids on anyone unlucky enough to be marked as a target were hit harder than any previous attacks that came before. Her charges were violent, swift, and strategic, something the Compagnie Indésirable had never been till she took command.A month out in the field and all the soldiers were well fed, wearing heavy fur pelts to keep them warm, and each one of them an army unto themselves. When their weapons failed they made new ones from bone, claws, and metals scavenged, they wasted nothing. However one day they came back to find Commander Appoline entertaining nobles when the “savages” came through the gates. Even though they had furs, coins, and raided supplies, they were unsightly to the nobles that were influential to Appoline’s goals and profits. The standing army that he was using to collect coin from Ishgard had now cost him some connections that would help him make more money. He was given funds every month to supplement this army, feed them, equipment them, and take care of their wellbeing. He had made a profit from their misery over the years, but now the nobles who had been praising him saw that he had nothing but ignorant, brutal savages. He would need to get rid of the more savage elements. He had his aids locate a large group of Ixali that, while a problem, and a hostile force, would help cull back the more savage elements in the companies. Having found this foe he did not hesitate once more to send the companies back out to attack them. Leveret was told there were only around three hundred foes to fight. Even though she prepared as she always did, the fact there were thousands of Ixali caught the entirety of her forces unprepared as they rushed to savage their foes. She called the two remaining companies she kept as reserves just to provide support and prevent a total route. However, the Ixali had surrounded her forces, and with their backs, to the walls, she rallied her forces as she had done in the Dragonsong War by hurling herself once more into the heart of the foe. The conflict lasted four hours, and the Ixali retreated, but there was not a single soldier in the Compagnie Indésirable that was not wounded, or dying. Leveret herself was littered with wounds, and her left eye left damaged. She sounded the retreat herself and after five days of marching through a freak snowstorm, finding their supplies had been incorrectly stocked, two hundred soldiers made it home. Freezing, and suffering from malnutrition they limped through the gates. Appoline did not expect them back so soon, and once more Aymeric was there to see the soldiers come through the gates. No longer even at company strength. Aymeric wasted no time in calling for aid, and healers to help the survivors. When asked what had happened, the soldiers once more did not say a word, but Appoline said he would talk to them. After standing in the room with Leveret, after her wounds had been field dressed, he politely sipped some tea. He berated her on her lack of judgment and blamed her for the losses. The good soldier she was, she listened and nodded, accepting the blame, the commander was never wrong.Aymeric was explained the situation with the soldiers, by Appoline who lied about Leveret being a poor captain. The noble Aymeric couldn’t believe it all, and said that the soldiers did deserve some time away again, till they could recover, or until suitable soldiers could be found to replace them.

Betrayal

Once more Leveret found herself in Ul’dah, and confronted by the small circle of friends she had made. They tried to cheer her up with the normal fare of sweet drinks, good food, and medical help. But, Appoline had drilled into her head that all those things made her weak, that these people would make her weak. She didn’t want to lose them. Needing to rest for now, and retreated to her room. Her rest was however short lived, for the next morning, she was informed on her link pearl that replacements had been found, and to return back home.Shamefully she tried to leave without being noticed, to slip away but when she saw her friends congregated in the Quicksand she approached and informed them she would be heading home. Some with scorn turned away from her, others tried to plead with her not to go, that she would die. The fear of death was nothing compared to knowing that if she didn’t go, everyone left alive would be punished, and she too would be branded a deserter. Desertion wasn’t just death to her, it was a stain on her soul and her honor. She made her return, despite the tears and the pain in her heart. The replacement soldiers were barely twelve summers old, undisciplined street urchins that had never touched a sword, spear, or held a shield in their entire lives. Though she only had one working eye, even she could see that these children would never be soldiers, and they were only there so the commander could punish her more. But she held it in, even as they were all once more sent out on patrols for weeks. Rations taken away for losing soldiers, losing soldiers protecting the children. In the past, they would not have tried so desperately to keep these children alive, but something was breaking in all of them. They were down to just the original eighty-seven soldiers, but every child they were marched out with came back home too.The commander called Leveret one more to his private chambers to browbeat her. She endured it. He struck her still-opened wounds with his noble cane. She endured it. He told her her rations would be taken away. She endured it. When he threatened to take away rations from the rest of the soldiers she finally spoke up. His cane came out and hit her across the face, and she didn’t flinch away. He saw this as rebellion, while she saw it as her discipline holding. He raved, hit her more times, and after he was done, she was still standing somehow, Appoline blamed her newfound friends in Ul’dah. She said nothing, till he smirked at her. He would increase the rations of everyone, including her if she did a simple task. She would return to Ul’dah, and beat those who poisoned her mind with weakness, and insubordination. If she came back with their teeth he would forgive her and the survivors of the company.(Story excerpt)
Leveret held her breath. She was always a good soldier, and she obeyed her orders no matter what they were. She had never failed or betrayed Commander Appoline, but he was testing her now? ‘You will return with their teeth in hand, or you will die upon a wrack.’ There was a pounding in her ears that was slowly drowning out his voice. He was still talking, but she only heard the sounds of screaming soldiers, shrieking dragons, roars, and battle cries, a heavy drumbeat in her ears. She felt her left eye stinging as tears formed and started to flood the wounded areas. Her right eye looked away from the Commander towards the fire.
She saw his shadow loom in front of her, and felt his hand strike the wounded side of her face and eye, clenching her teeth she growled at the strike. Again she felt his hand hit her face again, but she kept her eye on the fire, seeing the hordes of Nidhogg flying in the flames, the faces of the burning soldiers she served with, all of them shrieking in unison at her, their fury, death cries all echoing in her ears.A final slap took her out of the vision and refocused her into the material world. Fresh blood was coming out of the wounds around her left eye, the sting on her face from the multiple times he had struck her throbbing now. Focusing her right eye on him, he was rubbing his hand from the last slap he delivered to her. ‘Do you hear me you stupid mongrel? Get out of my sight before I retract my mercy.’‘Mercy?’ she questioned. Her heart was hammering in her chest now, and she felt the weight of something heavy on her back for the first time ever.‘Yes, my mercy to spare you and the rest of your savage friends. Now bring me those bastards’ teeth. Hurry along now, for every day you do not come back I will withhold your fellow soldier’s rations.’ Ul’dah was two day trip, four if she managed to catch another airship back in time. ‘My mercy doesn’t last forever.’There was something heavy on her back, and it was weighing her down. Dragging her down, making her gasp for air, and she was panting for some reason, while her heart hammered hard enough into her ribs to make her think it would burst free. Once more his hand came out, slapping sense into her. He was yelling now, no, screaming for some reason. The weight was off her back, in her hands, and she could hear herself roaring with defiance, and rage for some reason. He was recoiling from the weight that was taken off her back, howling now, his arm coming up to grab at something. She saw her sword in front of her now for some strange reason. The blade cut into his outstretched hand, severing his thumb at first, then the sword struck into his shoulder, and carried through. Bones split, meat rent, and then finally came a jarring strike into the stone floor. The room shook, some of the old mortar falling from the ceiling from the impact. She blinked, looking confused at the Commander’s gurgling body. He was still alive after being split like that? She knew what needed to be done. A mercy killing, to save the Commander from his suffering. Stepping close she lifted her right boot into the air and brought it down on the Commander’s skull.
(End excerpt)
The aids who came to the final screams of Appoline found Leveret covered in gore, and attacked her. There were eighteen aids in the keep, but when Leveret came out there were no aids left alive. Her fellow soldiers were in shock when they heard that the Commander was dead. They collectively knew she had done it, but none of them cared anymore. She was the senior officer, and officers were obeyed. The soldiers collected the bodies and marched them deep into the wilderness, leaving them there for the feral beasts and coming back to captain Leveret. Rations were broken into, food was given out, and medical attention was seen to.After a week of not receiving the normally prompt reports Appoline sent in, Ishgard's command came to the remote keep. They found half feral soldiers and children staring at them, but no commanding officers except for Leveret. Who was sleeping too deeply from her injuries to be woken up. The soldiers informed command what had happened. Somehow a terrible beast with white fur had broken into the keep, killed the aids and the commander and escaped into the wilderness before anyone could react. When questioned why they didn’t aid the commander, they pointed out the state they were in, and the wounds they had suffered. Not a single soldier’s story differed, every one of the ones asked said exactly the same thing. They would have no answers, despite seeing the massive cut on the stone floor, the vicious splattering of blood, bootprints, and obvious blood trails from a body being dragged, but not by a beast. Something had happened here and command spent the next few days going through the files. After Leveret finally woke up, thanks in part to healers command called in, her wounds were no longer open anymore. She was brought before the higher-ranking officers that were now swarming the keep. The news they gave her shook her world. She and every single soldier she ever served with were not on any official records. Her rank was a lie, as she wasn’t even a listed person living in Ishgard. While they appreciated that she served for so many years, fought and bled for their nation, all they could do was compensate her some for her service. They used a word she did not understand, embezzlement. Appoline had spent years siphoning the money given to him to build up his personal wealth. Still, Leveret did not understand or have the ability to pronounce that word. To her, her world was in ruins, she had betrayed the commander, and she wasn’t being punished for it, stead she was paid in a large bag full of gil, more money than she had ever seen in her entire life. With that money, she returned back to Ul’dah, and explained to her Roe friend what had happened the best she could. Understanding the Roe friend accepted Leveret’s story, and accepted her.EpilogueLeveret still wrestles with her actions that ended up with her murdering her commander. There are nights she wakes up screaming from the horrors she was forced to live out. But she is building a new life for herself. She has friends now, who care for her. A little miqo’te who she calls her sister. A powerful Au’ra man that she calls father, and a good friend with the Roe. Within a few short weeks, a letter from Ishgard arrived. The wax seal on the back looks important, but without the ability to read, Leveret doesn’t understand the contents within. She is afraid of what the letter might say, so she has kept quiet about it. Whatever is in that letter, no follow-up letters have come.
